Cornwall College has retained its Gold Hospitality accreditation from People 1st and can continue to be one of only two colleges in the country that can boast a Centre of Excellence in three disciplines.
Curriculum lead for hospitality and tourism at the college, Grant Mather, said it was “wonderful recognition of the hard work put in by staff to provide the very best education for students”.
“This is like a mini Ofsted for our catering and hospitality department,” he explained.
“Awarding body People 1st come in every two years and speak to staff, students and associated businesses, they look at our financials and the complete offering. There are only 16 colleges in the UK that hold gold status and we have also been highly commended in three areas, which makes us a Centre of Excellence for Food & Beverage Service, Fish & Shellfish, and Patisserie & Confectionary.”
The College was the first in the country to hold three Centre of Excellence statuses and was also the first to achieve one for fish and shellfish.
Two years ago both Trevenson restaurant on the Cornwall College Camborne campus and Cloisters at the St Austell campus achieved the Highly Commended AA Rosette, but Grant said it had meant working even harder to maintain the standard.
“Anyone in our industry that’s been around Michelin stars and AA Rosettes will tell you that obtaining the standards is very hard, but maintaining them is even harder,” he continued.
“The visit came at a time we were doing things outside of normal work, it was our Industry Week, we had the world’s number one pastry chef Ewald Notter with us, students were returning from foraging sessions and employers were coming in, which was great as it gave the reviewers a totally different aspect of our work.”
Grant said he was particularly pleased that the team rose to the challenge of maintaining the standard and looked forward to increased competition.
“As more colleges around the UK are buying into the accreditation it will raise standards so the reality is to achieve what we have, we are even better than we were two years ago, which is fantastic for every learner that comes through our door and sets them up for an incredible career in the hospitality and catering industries.”
Cornwall College also boasts Academy Nathan Outlaw, which develops budding young chefs, restaurateurs and hospitality students who study professional catering qualifications and receive first-class training and tuition from Nathan himself, as well as other industry leading experts.
