The Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards is well established as one of the leading training awards in the South West. Now in its fifth year, hosts Truro and Penwith College are again on the hunt for both Apprentices and Employers that are demonstrating outstanding achievement and commitment to Apprenticeships, and nominations opened this week via their website: www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/CAA.

Any learner or employer who is involved in Apprenticeship training in Cornwall is eligible to be nominated, regardless of the College or training provider delivering their training, provided they are still training as an Apprentice or completed their training after 1 June 2018.

This year’s awards sees the addition of two new categories. The new Land-based Apprentice of the Year Award offers a dedicated category for learners working in agricultural or horticultural roles.

The Beacon Award for Inclusive Apprenticeship Recruitment will be awarded to employers for the first time in 2019. Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Learning Enterprise Partnership (CIoS LEP) is sponsoring the award and in line with its UK first ‘Beacon Project’ has written the assessment criteria and will be judging the category that aims to reward businesses already going above and beyond to support Apprentices with disabilities and or long term health conditions.

The simple nomination process requiring just one 500 word explanation of why the Apprentice or Employer should win will see fifty-one nominees shortlisted when nominations close on 9 September.  A panel of judges consisting of employers across Cornwall will decide who will be awarded Apprentice or Employer of the Year in each of the seventeen categories at the Awards on 15 November.

Cornwall’s 2018 Apprentice of the Year and Engineering and Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year was 18 year-old CNC Setter Operator Daniel Rutter from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group. Judges were impressed by Daniel’s commitment to his role and clear passion for engineering, modifying fixtures in the workshop to increase efficiency and regularly representing his company at STEM events. All members of Daniel’s team, including managers, often comment on his extremely positive attitude and eagerness to succeed both in the workplace and at college.

A public vote will return in September to help determine Cornwall’s 2019 Apprentice Achiever of the Year.  2018’s winner, Amelia Wilson from Cornwall Council, is registered blind and uses specialist software to perform exceptionally well in her role and has become an integral part of her team.

RRL and Serco Defence won SME and Large Employer of the Year respectively in 2018 for the exceptional support and progression opportunities available to their Apprentices. The employers have since gone on to receive national recognition for their dedication to Apprenticeships.

The 2019 Awards will be held in Truro College’s Fal building on 15 November. Pirate FM are returning as official media partners and the College is thrilled to announce ex-students and Pirate FM presenters Holly Day and Neil Caddy will be hosting the evening. Recent national data demonstrates the very high levels of Apprenticeship achievement at Truro and Penwith College, placing it in the top 10% of all College providers nationally, with achievement rates more than 12% above average of all providers in the UK.
