Duchy Hospital

Claire started working at Duchy hospital, Cornwall’s only private hospital, as a housekeeper.

Whilst at work, Claire noticed that the hospital was recruiting for a chef apprentice and because she had always loved cooking she decided to apply. Claire was successful and was offered the position, which enabled her to start a new career as a chef.

After completing her level 2 professional cookery apprenticeship programme, Claire progressed onto a level 3 apprenticeship, however she decided to specialise in patisserie. Claire has achieved a great deal since starting her apprenticeship and she now helps the other chefs to write the hospital menus ensuring that the menu is different for their three customer types.

“As a single mum the apprenticeship programme has been the perfect option for me to start a new career. I haven’t needed to go away anywhere or study full-time and I have been able to fit it around my children. I highly recommend apprenticeships because of the work and study balance.”
